LL Cool J Announces New Single & Album In Over A Decade
LL Cool J has been hinting at a comeback for a while now, and with his new single “Saturday Night Special” set to drop on June 14, his return is finally imminent.
After more than ten years since his last full-length release, one of hip-hop’s most enduring legends is stepping back into the studio. LL Cool J recently confirmed that a new album will be out this fall. On Friday (June 7), he announced the release of his upcoming single “Saturday Night Special,” which will be available on June 14. The New York icon also promised fans that the features, tracklist, and full details of the album would be unveiled before its release. This news is thrilling for both longtime fans and newer listeners who may not have experienced one of his major album releases.
LL Cool J’s last album, Authentic, was released in 2013, marking his 13th studio project and his first since parting ways with Def Jam. It debuted at No. 23 on the Billboard 200, selling 14,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. It’s been a while since the “Mama Said Knock You Out” rapper has been in the spotlight primarily for his music. Among newer fans, a popular narrative is the debate over whether he or another classic hip-hop heartthrob, Method Man, is better looking.

All jokes aside, LL Cool J’s return to music is exciting and somewhat surprising, especially given his critical take on other hip-hop legends releasing new material. He recently expressed his disappointment with André 3000’s ambient/New Age album New Blue Sun, feeling that the Outkast star wasn’t delivering what fans expected. His comments were more about the perception that André 3000’s lyrical talents were not being utilized, though the issue is more nuanced than that.
Regardless, LL Cool J’s new album is highly anticipated, and we hope it brings him much success and personal satisfaction. As fans, we’re eager to share in the joy of his return, just as he shared in DJ Kool Herc’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It’s wonderful to see recognition for hip-hop legends from all generations in today’s media landscape. This balance is essential, reminding us that our greats deserve continued praise, attention, and interest.
