Tam’s Burgers Store Gets “Not Like Us” Mural Of Kendrick Lamar
‘Not Like Us’ Mural at Compton’s Iconic Tam’s Burgers No. 21 Honors Kendrick Lamar
In his latest music video “Not Like Us,” Kendrick Lamar returns to his hometown of Compton, prominently featuring the iconic Tam’s Burgers No. 21, a beloved staple of the community.
“We saw the music video and love Kendrick, so we wanted to come support the local business,” said Pasadena resident Blair Imani.
On the restaurant’s wall is a vibrant mural of Kendrick Lamar with the phrase “They Not Like Us” boldly displayed reported by ABC7 News.
“I painted it on Monday, and the process was very fast. I was here around 6 a.m. every morning from Monday through Wednesday,” said muralist Mike Norice.
Norice decided to honor Kendrick Lamar and Compton by creating the mural, hoping to capture the community’s culture and spirit.
“I want to show the people in the Watts-Compton area that they can achieve anything,” Norice said.
“The mural is incredible. Releasing the music video on July 4th and having this pop out on Juneteenth really shows that Black history is American history, and Black culture is part of American culture. The mural encapsulates this beautifully, adding significance to something you might just pass by,” Imani added.
“Knowing that this is an iconic spot where everyone comes is amazing. The food is great, and the mural is fantastic,” said Richard Oliveira, a visitor from Houston, Texas.
“A lot of people were drawn here by the video but didn’t have a clear picture reference. Now, this mural provides that reference, showing where I’m coming from and where I am now,” Norice explained.
