John Amos, Star of ‘Good Times,’ Passes Away at 84

John Amos, the celebrated actor known for his iconic roles in the 1970s sitcom “Good Times,” the classic miniseries “Roots,” and the “Coming to America” film series, has passed away at the age of 84.

The pioneering actor, renowned for his portrayal of strong Black male characters, died of natural causes on August 21, according to reports from Deadline.

Amos’s son, film producer Kelly Christopher Amos, shared the news in a heartfelt statement, saying, “It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned. He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”

Reflecting on his father’s life, Kelly added, “My father loved working as an actor throughout his entire life, most recently in ‘Suits LA’ where he played himself, and our documentary about his life journey as an actor, ‘America’s Dad.’ He was my dad, my best friend, and my hero. Thank you for your prayers and support at this time.”

John Amos was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1939. Before stepping into the world of acting, he pursued a career in football, playing at Colorado State University and attempting to join the NFL.

Amos made his entry into acting in 1970, with early appearances on “The Cosby Show” and “The Tim Conway Comedy Hour.” His breakout role came as Gordy the weatherman on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” paving the way for his enduring legacy as a beloved figure in television history.
