Jo Marie Payton Steps Up For ‘Judy Winslow’ Return For ‘Family Matters’

(VIA COMEDY HYPE) For a new episode of The Comedy Hype News Show; Pierre, Vanessa Fraction and guest Spanky Hayes talk with Symphony Thompson about a new viral video of Family Matter’s Jo Marie Payton making a stance on the disappearance of Judy Winslow and declaring she won’t return to do the show unless the character and actress Jamiee Foxworth returns.

FAMILY MATTERS INSIDE JOKE

One of the funniest quips about “Family Matters” has always been “What happened to Judy Winslow?” The Winslows had a family unit of a grandmother, two parents, a son, and two daughters. The youngest child was Judy Winslow. She was portrayed by Valerie Jones in season 1 and Jaimee Foxworth in following seasons. She mysteriously vanished from the series after the first four seasons. Jo Marie Payton makes mention of the writers leaving her in limbo with television viewers asking what happened to her on screen daughter.

Season 4 episode “Mama’s Wedding,” was officially the episode that fans of the show would see Judy Winslow. Her last action on the show was walking down the aisle as a flower girl. The television history joke for the series was that one day went up the stairs on an episode of Family Matters and was never heard from again. Jo Mary Payton talks about the ridiculous mindset of the writers believing viewers would not notice.

At a recent cast reunion at 90s Con, the Family Matters cast was asked about whether they’d be interested in revisiting the Winslow family with a series revival. Jo Marie Payton, who played the family matriarch Harriette, said she would only do a revival if Judy was written back into the story. The actress felt “personally hurt” when Jamiee Foxworth was written out of the show.

“I said, you guys need to tell me something that is not only creative, but also politically correct to straighten out this situation because there’s nowhere in the world a family … You gave me three kids, you took away my baby,” Payton said, as reported by People. “If you had taken away my oldest child, we could have always come up with … that she was at the mall or with her friends. You took away my baby, and when I asked you, ‘Why did you take away my baby girl?’ you said, ‘Nobody would notice.’”

Comedy Hype breaks down why Jo Marie Payton quit the series during its initial run in the 80’s and 90’s. Would you want to see a reboot of this classic sitcom?
