Will Smith Teases Potential Role in New Matrix Movie

Will Smith has sparked speculation about his involvement in a new Matrix film. Back in 1997, Smith famously turned down the opportunity to play Neo in the original Matrix movie, opting instead to star in Wild Wild West, a decision that has been widely discussed due to the latter film’s critical and commercial failure. The Matrix franchise made its return with The Matrix Resurrections in 2021, and Warner Bros. has since confirmed that The Matrix 5 is in development. This time, Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) will direct the project, stepping in for the Wachowski sisters.

On Instagram, Smith posted a cryptic video referencing his decision to pass on Neo and hinting at a possible connection to the upcoming Matrix film. The video features text displayed on a computer screen in a style reminiscent of the original Matrix aesthetic, complete with the iconic keyboard-clacking sound effects. The text asks, “What would The Matrix have been like with Will Smith as Neo?” before ending ominously with the revelation: “The Matrix has you.”

Will Smith as Neo in The Matrix 5?

Smith’s video may hint at his involvement in The Matrix 5, potentially as a new version of Neo. If so, this could mark a significant shift for the franchise, which might move forward without Keanu Reeves in the role. This would not be the first time The Matrix has recast major characters. For example, The Matrix Resurrections introduced Jonathan Groff as a new Agent Smith, replacing Hugo Weaving, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a different iteration of Morpheus, originally portrayed by Laurence Fishburne.

In The Matrix Resurrections, the filmmakers provided in-universe explanations for the altered appearances of these iconic characters. If Smith steps into the role of Neo, the sequel will likely offer a similar narrative justification for the character’s changed look and demeanor. Alternatively, Smith’s involvement could signal a full reboot of the franchise. In this scenario, other major roles, such as Trinity, might also be recast, potentially with someone other than Carrie-Anne Moss.

While The Matrix Resurrections straddled the line between a sequel and a soft reboot, The Matrix 5 could lean more heavily into reboot territory, presenting a fresh take on the series with new actors and updated storylines.

For now, fans will have to wait for further announcements to see how Smith’s tease plays into the future of the Matrix universe.
