Steve Austin Talks About John Cena Heel Turn & WrestleMania
John Cena shocked fans in Toronto and worldwide when he finally turned heel.
John Cena has the record according to the Guiness Book of World records for the longest duration as a fan favorite until pro wrestling villain in history. One of the biggest villains turned anti-hero was Stone Cold Steve Austin who talks about the Cena turn recently.
He talked about who his favorite WWE star is that took his match finisher and it appears to be the current “Final Boss” of WWE in Hollywood’s Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock. The same person that John Cena has joined forces with after last weekend’s Elimination Chamber WWE event.
He was asked about John Cena and whether or not the Texas Rattlesnake will appear at WrestleMania this year. He said “it had to happen sooner or later” in terms of Cena turning on the fans. The man many call the real greatest of all time also wonders if Cena doing this move may make him even more popular with the audience. He also admitted he hasn’t been contacted by anybody about being apart of WrestleMania after being asked if he would assist Cody Rhodes against John Cena and The Rock’s tandem.
Stone Cold Steve Austin’s History & Legacy
“Stone Cold” Steve Austin is one of the biggest icons in professional wrestling history. His rise to superstardom came in the late 1990s during WWE’s Attitude Era, where he became the ultimate anti-hero. Austin’s rebellious, beer-drinking, authority-defying character was a direct response to WWE’s shift toward a more edgy product. His legendary feud with WWE chairman Vince McMahon helped redefine wrestling, making him a household name.
John Cena’s New Heel Turn
John Cena has been the ultimate babyface (good guy) for nearly 20 years, with his “Never Give Up” attitude and family-friendly appeal. Unlike Austin, Cena never had a true heel run during his peak. His last major heel character was in 2002 as “The Doctor of Thuganomics,” but he turned face in 2003 and never looked back—despite constant “Cena Sucks” chants from certain fans.
Comparing The Heel Turns After Being The Top Stars
Fans wanted Austin to stay a face in 2001, leading to his turn failing compared to Hulk Hogan’s NWO run in WCW in the late 90s. But with Cena, the opposite is true—many fans have wanted a heel Cena for years. If Cena embraces a new persona, it could resemble Hollywood Rock (2003), where The Rock played an arrogant veteran who turned against fans. Cena, now a part-time Hollywood star, could use a similar gimmick.
If WWE plays it right, Cena’s heel turn could be one of the most significant character changes in wrestling history. If it flops, it might end up like Austin’s failed 2001 run. Either way, it’s a huge moment in wrestling!
