Snoop Dogg Biopic: Jonathan Daviss to Star, Directed by Craig Brewer
A highly anticipated biopic chronicling the life and legacy of Snoop Dogg is officially in development, with acclaimed director Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Coming 2 America) at the helm. The project is a collaboration between Universal Pictures and Death Row Pictures, following the label’s major deal with NBCUniversal.
Jonathan Daviss Cast as Snoop Dogg
Jonathan Daviss, best known for his breakout role in Outer Banks, has been cast to portray the legendary rapper. Snoop Dogg himself expressed strong confidence in the young actor, calling him “a dynamic actor, a great spirit, and a learner” during a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight.
“He’s able to take things and make it better,” Snoop said. “To have him around me and to see how he engulfs the spirit… Just a beautiful thing to be able to find somebody that can actually do justice to you while you’re still here and able to see it.”
Daviss echoed the sentiment, saying, “Playing a character like Dogg — he’s an icon. He’s so many things. But I really wanted to get down to who he was as a person. Like, a loving person and why people gravitate towards him… It’s been amazing just getting to explore that as an actor.”

Biopic to Explore Snoop’s Evolution and Legacy
The film will dive deep into Snoop Dogg’s transformation over the years—from his early days in Long Beach to becoming a global cultural figure. According to Daviss, he’s approaching the role by taking in Snoop’s public persona “in small pieces,” with the rap legend guiding him through the nuances of his life story.
Snoop revealed that the biopic will focus on his growth, the lessons he’s learned, and the values he embodies. “It’s about evolution, about what I’ve taught and what I’ve learned,” he noted.
Snoop Reflects on BET Ultimate Icon Tribute Award
The conversation also touched on Snoop’s recent BET Awards appearance, where he received the Ultimate Icon Tribute Award. Despite facing backlash in some circles, Snoop shared a message of positivity: “Love conquers all… Through the hate, you got to find the way to push love. And that’s what I’ve always been able to do. My grandmother always told me my work will continue to speak for me.”
The legendary rapper also used the moment to uplift his peers and celebrate rising stars in the hip hop community.
Shante Broadus Supports Casting Choice
Snoop’s wife, Shante Broadus, also shared her thoughts on the casting of Daviss, praising the choice. While her own on-screen counterpart hasn’t been cast yet, she revealed her dream pick would be actress Gail Bean (Snowfall).
With a star-studded creative team that includes Snoop Dogg, Brian Grazer, and Death Row Pictures President Sara Ramaker as producers, the biopic is shaping up to be a powerful tribute to one of hip hop’s most influential and enduring figures.
