Roy Ayers’ influence spans generations, shaping the evolution of jazz, neo-soul, and hip-hop. His groundbreaking work continues to resonate in contemporary music.

The legendary musician, known for seamlessly blending jazz, funk, and soul, passed away on March 5 in New York after battling a long illness. Variety confirmed his passing at the age of 84. His family released a statement reflecting on his remarkable life and enduring legacy.

“He lived a beautiful 84 years and will be sorely missed,” the statement read. “His family asks for privacy at this time, but a celebration of Roy’s life will be forthcoming.”

Ayers’ impact on music is immeasurable. Beginning his career in post-bop jazz, he quickly forged his own path, pioneering a sound that would lay the foundation for neo-soul and become a staple in hip-hop production. Even in his later years, Ayers remained an in-demand artist, working with the likes of Erykah Badu, Mos Def, and Mary J. Blige. His vibraphone mastery and production expertise contributed to seminal albums like Badu’s Mama’s Gun and Jill Scott’s Who Is Jill Scott?, solidifying his status as a godfather of neo-soul. His signature sound also left an imprint on modern hip-hop, as seen in Tyler, The Creator’s 2015 track “Find Your Wings.” Tyler himself expressed his admiration, recalling how Ayers personally praised his chord selections, a moment he described as deeply moving.
