Remy Ma Reminisces On “Outta Control” About Her 2007 Shooting

Remy Ma has shared a powerful snippet of her verse from Fat Joe and Cool & Dre’s new track, “Outta Control,” which touches on her 2007 shooting incident involving her friend.

While Remy’s captivating presence in the clip garnered attention, her poignant lyrics sparked a strong reaction among listeners. The verse in question includes: “They say I shot my friend over a band, and?/ Imagine what I’ll do to a bi**h I can’t stand.” This line refers to her 2008 convictions for assault, illegal weapon possession, and attempted coercion following the shooting of her friend, Makeda Barnes-Joseph.

Remy served six of an eight-year sentence at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women after the incident, which occurred after her birthday celebration in New York. The altercation with Barnes-Joseph reportedly stemmed from a dispute over missing money, resulting in Barnes-Joseph being shot twice in the stomach.

REMY MA WAS RELEASED IN 2014

Upon her release on August 1, 2014, the Bronx rapper reflected on her imprisonment and newfound freedom on Instagram. “At this moment 1 year ago I was sitting in a cell wondering when I was coming home,” she wrote. “I had actually given up hope that it would even happen. I was supposed to be released July 31, 2014 & I had woke up on August 1, 2014 STILL in prison; I was devastated. Yet, by the grace of my merciful God, I was able to awake the next day at home, in my bed, and post my 1st selfie. At this moment I was so happy but still in shock that I was actually ‘free’.”

In another heartfelt post, she expressed her gratitude: “Here it is, exactly 1 year later and it feels great to say #ImAround. Thank you to everyone that supported me and helped make my transition back into society a warm, inviting, & loving feeling [kiss emoji] I am truly thankful.”

REMY MA ACKNOWLEDGES HER HUSBAND PAPOOSE

She also acknowledged her husband, Papoose, for his unwavering support: “However, I would not have been able to be WHO I am & where I am today had it not been for my loyal, honest, dedicated, & loving husband and best friend @papoosepapoose. He kept me sane; he kept me grounded; he made me believe that it was possible to start again. I love him and cannot express how thankful & honored I am to have such a REAL real one.”

Fast forward to June of this year, Remy now faces another family ordeal as her son, Jayson Scott, awaits trial for the fatal shooting of Darius Guillebeaux. Scott, who has appeared on reality TV with his mother, has been charged with first and second-degree murder, reckless endangerment, and four counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

Prosecutors allege that Scott was hired to kill Guillebeaux in June 2021 and fired at the victim multiple times. If convicted, Scott could face life imprisonment without parole.

REMY MA SAYS HER SON IS INNOCENT

Due to legal constraints, Remy Ma has maintained her son’s innocence and called for a thorough investigation. She told TMZ: “We stand by Jayson’s innocence and pray that the NYPD will conduct a complete and thorough investigation to reveal the truth. This is undoubtedly a difficult time for my family and me. While we sincerely appreciate the love and support we have received from all of you, we kindly ask for privacy as our legal team works to prove Jayson’s innocence.”

“As his mother, I want to address this situation personally but have been strongly advised by his legal counsel not to say anything — as most people in similar situations are informed by their attorneys due to it being an active case,” she added.

With her son’s future uncertain, the timing of her lyrics about her own shooting case might seem ill-advised to some. Take a listen to the full single below.
