R&B Legend Walter Scott of The Whispers Dies at 81
Walter Scott, iconic co-founder and vocalist of the legendary R&B group The Whispers, passed away on the morning of June 26, 2025, at the age of 81, due to complications from stage‑4 stomach cancer at an Oakland, California hospital as reported by LA Sentinel News.
A Storied Career Spanning Six Decades
Born on September 3, 1943, in Fort Worth, Texas, Walter and his twin brother Wallace “Scotty” Scott rose to fame in the early 1960s. Their journey began on street corners in Los Angeles and evolved into the formation of The Whispers—a group that became synonymous with smooth harmonies and R&B hits.
After recording for Dore Records, the group gained momentum with their soft, harmonious style. They reached their commercial peak following their 1976 signing to SOLAR Records, delivering timeless hits such as “And the Beat Goes On”, “Rock Steady”, and “It’s a Love Thing.”
