NBA Great Dikembe Mutombo Passes Away At Age 58

The NBA Hall of Famer and global ambassador was 58 years old.

Dikembe Mutombo, one of the greatest shot-blockers in NBA history, has sadly passed away at the age of 58, following a two-year battle with brain cancer. ESPN and multiple other sources confirmed the news. The 2015 Hall of Fame inductee first made his mark at Georgetown University before being drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1991. Over his impressive 18-year career, Mutombo played for the Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, and Houston Rockets, becoming a dominant force on the defensive end of the court.

Mutombo’s exceptional shot-blocking ability earned him the title of Defensive Player of the Year four times. Additionally, he was named to six All-Defensive teams, received three All-NBA selections, and appeared in eight NBA All-Star Games. His presence on the court and his signature finger-wag after blocking shots made him a standout player in every sense.

After retiring at the end of the 2008-2009 season, Mutombo continued to stay actively involved with the NBA. He became an ambassador for the league and played a pivotal role in the development of the Basketball Africa League, helping to expand basketball’s reach across the continent. But Mutombo’s impact wasn’t limited to basketball; he was also known for his remarkable humanitarian efforts. In 1997, he established the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, which aimed to improve the quality of life in his native Democratic Republic of Congo. One of the foundation’s most significant achievements is the construction of a 170-bed hospital in Kinshasa, which provides medical care to those in need, regardless of their financial situation.

Dikembe Mutombo’s Legacy as an NBA Legend Lives On

Two years ago, it was revealed that Mutombo was undergoing treatment for a brain tumor in Atlanta, but despite his courageous battle, he passed away on Monday, surrounded by his family.
