Nas Joins “Beat Street: Where Are They Now?” — A Three-Part Docuseries Celebrating Hip Hop’s Legacy

Reel Sung Productions, the multimedia company founded by breakdancing legend Tony “Mr. Wave” Wesley, has announced that GRAMMY Award-winning hip hop icon Nas will appear in the highly anticipated three-part docuseries Beat Street: Where Are They Now? The official trailer premieres exclusively on Reel Sung Productions’ YouTube channel on Thursday, October 23, at 12 a.m. EDT.

A Reunion Four Decades in the Making

The new series reunites 19 original cast members from the groundbreaking 1984 film Beat Street, the first major motion picture to bring hip hop culture to global audiences. Returning stars include Rae Dawn Chong, Guy Davis, and Jon Chardiet, alongside hip hop trailblazers Melle Mel, Scorpio, Kool Moe Dee, and Doug E. Fresh.

Chong and Davis will serve as creative advisors, while Chardiet joins the production team as a co-producer. Together, they revisit the film that captured the raw energy and authenticity of early hip hop and helped shape its worldwide influence.

Nas Reflects on Beat Street’s Enduring Impact

Joining the original cast are several major hip hop figures who cite Beat Street as a life-changing influence. Alongside Nas, the docuseries features Roxanne Shanté, the 2025 GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient; acclaimed producer DJ Toomp; and Ray “Yoda” Murray of Organized Noize.

Beat Street is a cornerstone of hip hop’s legacy,” Nas said. “I’ve put a lot of younger people on to the movie. It’s a raw look at New York streets that can’t be forgotten. Because of Beat Street—and the people in it who were the real thing—hip hop turned into something bigger than everything. People need to see why in real time.”

A Vision from One of Hip Hop’s Originals

The docuseries is executive-produced by Tony “Mr. Wave” Wesley, CEO of Reel Sung Productions, who not only appeared in the original film but also helped define breakdancing as a founding member of the New York City Breakers.

“We always knew Beat Street was different, but we didn’t realize it would become a global phenomenon,” Wesley said. “Nas, Roxanne Shanté, and DJ Toomp were the babies of Beat Street—the film inspired them to create music. Reel Sung Productions is proud to bring these stories full circle for today’s audiences.”

Revisiting a Cultural Milestone

Originally produced in 1984 by Harry Belafonte and David V. Picker, Beat Street was the first feature film to showcase all four foundational elements of hip hop — MCing, DJing, breakdancing, and graffiti art — featuring real pioneers from each discipline.

Beat Street: Where Are They Now? reunites the film’s original artists, actors, and producers to reflect on their shared history and the genre’s global rise. “The b-boys were in our element during the filming of Beat Street, but the actors were not,” Wesley explained. “This docuseries allows them to tell their side of the story. I brought us all together for that reason.”

Additional Appearances

The docuseries also includes appearances from DJ RIP, Powerful Pexster, Michael Holman, Lisa Lee, DJ Jazzy Jay, Mr. Biggs, Arthur Baker, and Flip Rock, rounding out a multigenerational cast that embodies hip hop’s evolution from the Bronx to the world stage.
