Michael Jackson’s Thriller Hits Billboard Milestone 14 Years After His Death

Michael Jackson continues to cement his place in music history more than a decade after his passing. His iconic album Thriller has now spent an astounding 600 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart, solidifying its legacy as one of the most successful albums of all time.

Iconic Toronto R&B/Soul artist, Sean Jones, speaks about his impact and how his sound surpasses barriers of just rhythm and blues sounds in the video above.

Thriller, Jackson’s sixth solo studio album, made an impressive leap on the Billboard 200, rising 42 spots to No. 63 in the latest rankings. This achievement places Thriller among an elite group of only 10 albums to have remained on the chart for at least 600 weeks. Leading the list is Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, which has spent a record-breaking 984 weeks on the chart, followed by albums from legendary artists like Bob Marley and the Wailers, Journey, Metallica, and Nirvana.

HALLOWEEN SEASON

As October approaches, Thriller sees its annual resurgence, with fans returning to the classic album and its famous title track in anticipation of Halloween. The song, synonymous with the spooky season, continues to boost Jackson’s chart performance each fall. This week alone, Thriller climbed nearly 20 spots, from No. 128 to No. 109 on the Billboard 200, and saw increases across multiple other Billboard charts. The album rose to No. 11 on the Top R&B Albums chart, No. 14 on the Vinyl Albums chart, No. 37 on Top Album Sales, and No. 39 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

According to Luminate, Thriller moved 10,600 equivalent units in the most recent tracking period, with over 2,500 purchases coming from physical and digital album sales, showing steady growth from the previous week.

ESSENTIAL MICHAEL JACKSON

Thriller’s continued dominance is not limited to just the album itself. Another Jackson collection, The Essential Michael Jackson, is also gaining momentum thanks to renewed interest in his work during this time of year. The compilation, which features many of Jackson’s greatest hits, including Thriller, has been making gains on the Billboard 200 as well.

While Michael Jackson may not have predicted the lasting impact of his 1982 hit, Thriller has become an annual sensation. Each Halloween season, the song returns to various Billboard charts, adding to its impressive record of 67 stays on the R&B Digital Song Sales list. The track first reached No. 1 on that chart in November 2017, solidifying its place as a Halloween anthem.

Jackson’s influence on modern music remains undeniable, with Thriller standing as a timeless work that continues to captivate listeners year after year.
