Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal Video Surpasses A Billion Views

Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” has now surpassed 1 billion views on YouTube.

Michael Jackson‘s “Smooth Criminal” music video, released in 1988, is one of his most iconic visuals. The video is set in a 1930s-inspired nightclub, reminiscent of a film noir style, with Jackson portraying a slick gangster-like character. It is part of his feature-length film Moonwalker but also stands on its own as a standalone music video.

The video takes place in Club 30’s, a smoky, stylish club with sharp-suited dancers. The backdrop is filled with shadows, adding to the mysterious and dangerous vibe of the story. Inspired in part by Fred Astaire’s “Girl Hunt Ballet” dance number in the film The Band Wagon, “Smooth Criminal” was named Best Video at the BRIT Awards, Broadcast Film Critics Association and the People’s Choice Awards.

ANTI-GRAVITY LEAN

One of the most memorable moments is Jackson’s gravity-defying “anti-gravity lean,” where he and his dancers appear to tilt forward far beyond normal human ability without falling over. This effect was achieved with specially designed shoes patented by Jackson.

In the video, Jackson’s character seems to be searching for someone named “Annie,” who may have been attacked or is in danger (as referenced in the song’s lyrics, “Annie, are you okay?”). The narrative is loosely connected to a crime thriller theme, although much of the focus is on the dance performances.
