Mercedes Moné Opens Up About WWE Walkout & Issues With Vince McMahon

Mercedes Mone on the Vince McMahon Netflix Documentary: “All I do know is I’m going to grab a blunt, I’m going to get some wine, and I’m going to be watching some Netflix. I can’t wait.”

THE END OF SASHA BANKS

Back in May 2022, the wrestling world was shaken when Mercedes Moné, then known as Sasha Banks, along with her tag team partner Naomi, walked out during a live broadcast of Raw. At the time, they were the Women’s Tag Team Champions, and they left their championship titles on the desk of the Head of Talent Relations before exiting the arena. As they were involved in the creative plans for that evening’s show, the production team had to make last-minute changes. The walkout was even addressed on air, with commentary labeling their actions as unprofessional, a move that didn’t sit well with many fans.

THE REASON FOR LEAVING WWE

Now, over two years later, Moné is a part of AEW and currently holds the TBS Championship. Although her WWE exit has been a frequent topic in interviews, she has seldom gone into full detail about the circumstances. However, during a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, Moné opened up about her time in WWE and her issues with Vince McMahon, who was “The Chairman” at that time:

I left for many different reasons. A lot of personal stuff happened between me and the Chairman. I didn’t like the way he spoke to me or how I was treated. It was then I felt I needed to listen to my heart and soul. There was a moment of clarity, and I knew it was time to leave WWE. I felt guided.

When questioned about the allegations against McMahon, Moné kept her response brief:

I’m not the lawyer. I don’t know.

She further elaborated on how McMahon’s behavior impacted her that day, explaining that the encounter was intense and influenced her decision to walk away:

“It was pretty crazy that day. He spoke to me in a way that crossed the line. That was enough for me to realize, ‘If you stay, this isn’t okay. This is your life—what example will you set for your future children or others who look up to you?’ After ten years in the company, I felt it was time to stand up for myself. A moment of clarity told me, ‘You have to walk away and pursue something better for yourself.’ And that’s exactly what I did.”

Today, Mercedes Moné continues to make her mark in the wrestling industry, standing as an inspiration for others who feel the need to stand up for themselves.
