MC LYTE Announces New Single With Mary Mary

MC Lyte joined other hip hop legends such as Fat Joe and KRS One in celebrating the 51st birthday of the genre.

The world of hip hop was encouraged to “Walk This Way” in a march throughout the Bronx to promote good health and non-violence in urban communities.

WALK THIS WAY’S IMPACT ON HIP HOP

One of the most significant moments in hip hop history included Run-DMC collaboration with the rock band Aerosmith on the song “Walk This Way.” Originally, “Walk This Way” was a hit single by Aerosmith, released in 1975. The song was written by Aerosmith members Steven Tyler and Joe Perry and became one of the band’s signature tracks.

In 1986, Run-DMC and producer Rick Rubin decided to cover “Walk This Way” for the group’s third album, Raising Hell. Instead of merely sampling the song, they invited Aerosmith’s lead singer Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry to perform on the track. This collaboration was groundbreaking, as it bridged the gap between rock and rap, two genres that had been largely separate.

The song title has come full circle decades later as the pioneers try to lead the way for the improvement of communities influenced by hip hop. “We’re going to show you how to survive, strive and be alive,” the Run DMC legend said. “We created Hip Hop so we didn’t have to glorify or celebrate all the negativity that is attacking and prevalent in our communities. We are the solution.

“The Walk This Way March. Why? Because we want to show you there is a way because we are the way.”

“Walk This Way” is considered one of the most important collaborations in music history. It demonstrated the potential for cross-genre partnerships and paved the way for future collaborations between hip-hop artists and musicians from other genres.
