Toronto Renames Regent Park Playground as Louis March Park
Toronto officially honored the late Louis March, a tireless advocate against gun violence, by renaming a park in Regent Park after him during a public ceremony on Sunday. The newly redesigned space, formerly known as Sumach-Shuter Parkette, will now be known as Louis March Park — a fitting tribute to his decades of dedication to community safety and youth empowerment.
Louis March founded the Zero Gun Violence Movement and spent over 30 years addressing the root causes of gun violence across Toronto. His advocacy created vital spaces for dialogue, healing, and solutions, particularly within marginalized neighborhoods impacted by violence. March’s work left an indelible mark on countless individuals and families, making this honor a meaningful gesture from the city.
Toronto Centre Councillor Chris Moise, who led the council motion for the renaming, stood alongside Mayor Olivia Chow and members of March’s family during the ceremony. In an official statement, the city acknowledged March’s “unwavering dedication to families and individuals across the GTA,” recognizing his commitment to promoting healing and safety.
However, not everyone at the event was pleased with how the renaming process unfolded. Some Regent Park residents expressed frustration, claiming they weren’t properly informed about the name change. Long-time community members argued that while they supported honoring March, the process lacked transparency and neighborhood input.
“We have no issue with who the park is named after, it’s just how the name came about,” said local resident Anne-Marie Boone. “If Louis March did his work in Regent Park with the Mothers of Peace, we’re saying that that should have been the park that was named after him.”
Despite the controversy, Louis March’s legacy remains undeniable. Over the years, WorldWide Entertainment TV worked closely with March to document his marches, interviews, and advocacy efforts, helping to amplify his message of hope and change.
