Lil Wayne Skips Super Bowl, Promises “Very Special” Surprise for New Orleans

Lil Wayne isn’t letting his Super Bowl snub keep him down. The legendary rapper took to Instagram on Tuesday to tease a “very special” announcement for his hometown of New Orleans, hinting that fans should stay tuned.

Lil Wayne’s Message to Fans

In his Instagram video, Wayne made it clear that while he won’t be attending the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, he’s been working on something big.

“Y’all know I’m not gonna be there this week, which means I guess there’s a seat to fill,” he said. “Shout out to New Orleans, but I’ve been working on something very special. I got something exciting coming for you, Thursday, the sixth.”

Until then, he said he’ll just be “chilling.”

Wayne’s Reaction to Being Passed Over for the Super Bowl

Instead of selecting Lil Wayne, the NFL went with Kendrick Lamar to headline this year’s halftime show. The decision didn’t sit well with Wayne, who vented his frustration during his Lil Weezyana Fest performance last year.

“I told myself I wanna be on stage at the Super Bowl in front of my mom, and I worked my a* off to get that position,”* he told the crowd. “It was ripped away from me, but this moment right here… they can’t take this away from me.”

NFL & Roc Nation Considered Wayne—But Chose Kendrick

According to Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez, Lil Wayne was in the conversation for the Super Bowl headlining spot. Speaking to The New Orleans Advocate, she confirmed:

“I didn’t choose the artist, but I do believe that definitely there was consideration [for Lil Wayne].”

Ultimately, the league felt that Kendrick Lamar was the right fit for this moment, and he’ll be joined by SZA during his performance.

Super Bowl LIX Details

The Super Bowl kicks off on Sunday, February 9th, at 6:30 PM ET, with the Kansas City Chiefs facing off against the Philadelphia Eagles. If the Chiefs win, they’ll make history as the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.

What’s Next for Lil Wayne?

While Wayne won’t be at the big game, all eyes are now on his February 6th announcement. Could it be new music? A major event? A hometown concert? Fans won’t have to wait long to find out.
