Jones’ publicist, Arnold Robinson, stated the iconic figure died on Sunday, November 3, at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by his family. The news was initially reported by the Associated Press.
In a statement, the Jones family shared, “Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing. Although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him.”
“He was truly one of a kind, and we will miss him dearly. QUINCY JONES FAMILY TREE
Quincy Jones is survived by his seven children: Rashida Jones, Kidada Jones, Kenya Kinski-Jones, Quincy Jones III, Jolie Jones Levine, Martina Jones, and Rachel Jones. He also leaves behind grandchildren Isaiah Jones Koenig, Quincy Renzo Delight Jones IV, and Nea Jones. Additionally, he was the godfather to actor-musician Quincy Brown, who was named in his honor.
Jones narrowly escaped death in 1974 at the age of 41. After suffering a brain aneurysm, he underwent surgery and was later informed of a second aneurysm poised to rupture. Following a second operation, he was told his odds of survival were just one in a hundred. Reflecting on the ordeal in a 2018 interview with GQ, Jones recalled, “It was scary, like somebody blew my brains out. The main artery to your brain explodes, you know.”
YOUNG QUINCY JONES
Born on March 14, 1933, in Chicago, Jones first gained recognition as a trumpet player in bands led by jazz legends such as Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie.
At the age of 14, Jones fled an abusive home, where his stepmother had never called him by his name until he was 57. He lied about his age, claiming to be 18, to join the National Guard. However, his time there was marred by severe racism.
During this period, Jones experienced a harrowing accident on the way to a rodeo in Yakima. A bus collided with the vehicle he was in, killing everyone except him. The traumatic event left a lasting impact, preventing him from ever learning to drive.
Quincy Jones’ remarkable life and enduring legacy in the world of music will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
