Lauryn Hill’s Television Acting Debut On Here & Now In 1992

“Old School Saturday” with WorldWide Entertainment TV throwback clip with an episode of the NBC series Here and Now, which featured guest appearances by a then up-and-coming Lauryn Hill and actor Omar Epps. The series starred Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, and S. Epatha Merkerson. The series would last only one season despite the talented cast that was created.

In an interview, Warner revealed that Here and Now was originally conceived as a spin-off for his character Theo Huxtable from The Cosby Show, much like how A Different World was a spin-off for Lisa Bonet’s character Denise Huxtable. However, both Warner and Bill Cosby decided against the idea, fearing Warner might become perpetually associated with the role of Theo. To differentiate the series, Warner’s character was renamed Alexander James (AJ).

Warner shared that NBC scheduled the series on Saturday nights, a time slot notorious for low viewership, which likely contributed to its early cancellation. Another show that aired during the hour was Patti Labelle’s Out All Night that featured Morris Chestnut and Vivica Fox.

Notably, Here and Now marked Lauryn Hill’s television acting debut in 1991. Produced by Bill Cosby, the show featured Hill as Benita, the girlfriend of Omar Epps’ character. Around this time, Hill was preparing for her breakout role in Sister Act 2. Although short-lived, the series remains a nostalgic glimpse into the early careers of its talented cast.
