Drake is perhaps the biggest rap star on the planet in which we have never seen due to his record smashing stream numbers. It appears that Drake is poised to have his biggest hit yet in his career. The remix of Lauryn Hill’s classic “Ex Factor” took the radio by storm.

A CLASSIC OF A CLASSIC?

The new generation of hip hop fans saw what a true listener of its history could do when he mixes new school with old school. Lauryn Hill who is proclaimed by man to be the G.O.A.T. of female rappers in 1998 released one of the greatest albums ever with “MisEducation of Lauryn Hill”.

The song was about her relationship with her group member Wyclef Jean of the popular Fugees in the 1990’s. At the time the two kept their affairs so quiet that the other member in the group Pras had no idea about it.

The part of the song that Drake sampled with the legend’s undeniable vocal prowess included:

Drake in 2018 has flipped the song to reverse the pain felt by L Boogie on the classic. Drizzy made the song into a women empowerment song with lyrics such as:

Drake enlisted a heavy ensemble of women for the music video included in order Olivia Wilde, Misty Copeland, Issa Rae, Rashida Jones, Jordan Dunn, Tracee Ellis Ross, Tiffany Haddish, Yara Shahidi, Zoe Saldana, Elizabeth and Victoria Lejohnharta, Letitia Wright, Bria Vinaite, Emma Roberts, Syd, and Michelle Rodriguez.

Ironically the roots of Lauryn Hill’s Ex Factor came out from another heartbreak song by legendary Barbara Streisand with the hit “The Way We Were” that came out in 1973.

The song was covered by another woman in 1974. The incomparable Gladys Knight and The Pips also had their own rendition of the Barbara Streisand classic. It was from this version that the legendary Wu Tang Clan introduced the song to a new audience of hip hop in the 1990’s with “Can It All Be Simple”.

Now wouldn’t be historic if Drake could have a remix with all of these artists who contributed to this song in some way shape or form? A dream scenario for sure, but who would have thought we would hear a new Michael Jackson song on a Drake album in 2018?
