Dr. Dre Sued for $10 Million Over Alleged Harassment of Divorce Counselor
The counselor claims he was subjected to threats and intimidation.
Dr. Dre, who finalized his divorce from Nicole Young in 2021 after settling for $100 million, is now facing a new legal battle. Dr. Charles J. Sophy, a divorce counselor who worked with the couple, is suing the music mogul for $10 million, alleging that Dre harassed him throughout the divorce process. The lawsuit, filed on October 9 in Los Angeles County Court and first reported by Billboard, accuses Dre of subjecting Sophy to a “barrage of threats” over the course of their interactions.
According to the lawsuit, Dr. Sophy claims that instead of engaging in the mediation process constructively, Dr. Dre directed his frustrations at him. The counselor alleges that the harassment spanned nearly a year, during which he received late-night texts, threats of violence, and homophobic insults. The suit reads, “[Dre] decided to take his frustrations about the mediation out on Dr. Sophy,” leading to a “sustained campaign” of intimidation.
Sophy Seeks Restraining Order Against Dr. Dre
Dr. Sophy, who began working with Dr. Dre and Nicole Young in 2018, claims that after a period of no contact, Dre reached out again via text, demanding explanations about supposed attempts to influence others to speak negatively about him to the media. Dre allegedly texted, “I’m not going anywhere until you explain to me why you tried to talk [an unnamed person] into saying negative things about me.” Sophy denied these accusations, calling them “baseless” and “far-fetched.”
In addition to seeking $10 million in damages, Dr. Sophy is also requesting a restraining order against Dr. Dre to ensure his safety. He cited Dre’s history of alleged violence, including past accusations of abuse involving journalist Dee Barnes and other women. While Dre has publicly apologized for the incident with Barnes, he has consistently denied any abuse toward his ex-wife Nicole Young.
