Dr. Dre Celebrates Opening of $200M Compton High School Campus

A new chapter has begun for Compton students as the city unveiled its brand-new $200 million high school campus. Spanning 31 acres and designed to serve nearly 2,000 students—many from low-income families—the state-of-the-art facility includes a Performing Arts Center and aims to be a hub for creativity and innovation.

Dr. Dre, a Compton native and major supporter of the project, spoke at the opening ceremony and emphasized the school’s potential impact.

“The new Compton High School and Performing Arts Center is a world-class educational facility that is poised to become the center for innovation and creativity, bringing this life, this thing that we dreamed about, to a reality for all the students in this city,” Dre told ABC News. “Compton is a breeding ground for talent. I’m standing here as literal proof that coming from Compton, there is nothing that can stop me—and everything and anything is possible.”

Compton has long been a launchpad for talent, with notable figures such as Kendrick Lamar, Ice Cube, the Williams sisters, and DeMar DeRozan rising to global prominence. Leaders involved in the project hope the new school will help cultivate even more success stories by providing students with the tools and environment they need to thrive.

The ceremonial ribbon-cutting took place on May 22, but students won’t begin classes on the new campus until the 2025–2026 school year. With strong community backing and a focus on opportunity, the new Compton High School is set to inspire the next generation.
