HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ROSA PARKS
Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913, in Tuskegee, Alabama. She is best known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 when she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus. Her act of defiance became a symbol of the Civil Rights Movement, leading to a Supreme Court ruling that segregation on public buses was unconstitutional.
Her birthday, February 4, is now recognized as Rosa Parks Day in some U.S. states, including California and Missouri, to honor her contributions to civil rights. She passed away on October 24, 2005, but her legacy continues to inspire people around the world.
BLACK HISTORY MONTH’S HISTORY
Black History Month began as Negro History Week in 1926, created by Carter G. Woodson, a historian and founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) (now ASALH). Woodson chose the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass (Feb. 14) and Abraham Lincoln (Feb. 12), both of whom were important figures in Black history.
By the 1960s, during the Civil Rights Movement, there was a growing push to expand the celebration. In 1976, during the U.S. Bicentennial, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month, urging Americans to honor the achievements of Black Americans.
Now, Black History Month is celebrated in February in the U.S. and Canada, while the U.K., Ireland, and the Netherlands observe it in October. Each year, there is a different theme focusing on key aspects of Black history and culture.
