Chicago Takes Legal Action Against Glock Over Modified Firearms, Citing Drake & 21 Savage
Chicago has set its sights on Glock, with the city referencing Drake and Lil Zay Osama in a 41-page complaint against the firearms manufacturer. The lawsuit accuses Glock of violating the Illinois Firearms Industry Responsibility Act by allowing their firearms to be unlawfully modified into machine guns. This act, passed recently, holds gun manufacturers accountable for the harm caused by their unsafe sales and marketing practices.
Drawing a cultural connection, the city pointed to Drake and 21 Savage’s track “Jimmy Cooks.” In the song, 21 Savage raps about a Glock with modifications, suggesting a broader cultural acceptance of such alterations.
“Chicago has long grappled with a gun violence epidemic, and it’s clear that the ease of modifying Glocks has exacerbated the situation,” the city stated in its lawsuit. It further alleges that Glock is aware of the issue but has neglected to address it, prioritizing profits over public safety and violating the law in the process.
According to the filing, Chicago police have seized over 1,100 modified Glocks between 2021 and 2023. Deputy Mayor of Community Safety Garien Gatewood emphasized the severity of the city’s gun violence problem, stating, “We’re dealing with mass shootings at a level not seen anywhere else in the country.”
The lawsuit underscores the city’s determination to address the proliferation of modified firearms, referencing cultural influences like the lyrics in “Jimmy Cooks” to highlight the issue’s significance.
