Atlanta hip-hop icon DJ Unk dies at 42 Years Of Age

Anthony Leonard Platt, known professionally as DJ Unk, an influential figure in Atlanta’s hip-hop scene and a pioneer of the snap music subgenre, has passed away, according to TMZ.

 

His wife, Anthony Leonard Platt, shared the news of his passing on social media on Friday, requesting privacy during this difficult time. “Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER,” she wrote.

DJ Unk is celebrated as a pioneer of snap music, with his iconic tracks continuing to play in clubs and on playlists across the nation.

Born on November 28, 1982, in Atlanta, Platt gained national recognition in the mid-2000s with his hit single, “Walk It Out,” which reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His signature sound, characterized by infectious beats and an energetic flow, made him a defining voice in Southern hip-hop.

DEBUT ALBUM CAME IN 2006

Unk’s 2006 debut album, Beat’n Down Yo Block!, cemented his influence in the music scene with hits such as “Walk It Out” and “2 Step,” both of which became cultural anthems for a generation. He continued his momentum with the release of his second album, 2econd Season, in 2008, further highlighting his skills as a DJ, rapper, and producer.

Throughout his career, DJ Unk collaborated with prominent artists and producers, including DJ Montay and V.I.C., leaving a lasting impact on Atlanta’s music landscape.

The Atlanta Falcons honored him by sharing a photo of him wearing a Falcons shirt while performing.

While the cause of his death has not been disclosed, it is known that he faced an undisclosed illness in 2009, which affected his career.

Details regarding funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
