Akademiks Speaks With Top5 After His Release With Popcaan & Bundog
DJ Akademiks has a complicated and often contentious history with Toronto rappers, marked by public disputes, criticism, and a mix of support and disdain.
Top5 who has been apart of broadcasts with Akademiks in the past, gave an exclusive call in after his recent release from prison. On the phone call was fellow Toronto rapper Bundog of BFR and OVO affiliated artist Popcaan. Listen below.
DJ Akademiks, a well-known hip-hop commentator and media personality, initially gained fame through his coverage of the Chicago drill scene on YouTube. As he expanded his coverage to other regions, he began paying attention to the Toronto rap scene, particularly as the city’s music became more prominent on the international stage due to artists like Drake and The Weeknd.
Drake has been a central figure in bridging the gap between Toronto rappers and the larger music industry, and DJ Akademiks has often shown respect and admiration for him.

The relationship between DJ Akademiks and other Toronto rappers has been more turbulent. As he covered Toronto’s rap scene, he often highlighted the violent feuds and street culture associated with it, which some artists felt sensationalized their struggles or painted them in a negative light. This led to criticism from Toronto artists who believed that Akademiks was profiting off the violence and drama within their community without genuinely supporting their music or artistry.
TOP5 AND AKADEMIKS HISTORY
One of the most notable conflicts was with rapper Top5, who has had multiple run-ins with DJ Akademiks. The two exchanged heated words online, with Top5 accusing Akademiks of not fully understanding or representing Toronto’s culture. Despite the beef, Top5 and Akademiks would still communicate at times, and Akademiks even provided some media coverage that boosted Top5’s profile. The dynamic remained complicated, with moments of both mutual benefit and intense animosity.

Despite the tension, DJ Akademiks has played a role in exposing Toronto rappers to a broader audience. His platform has allowed artists from the city to reach listeners who might not have discovered their music otherwise. This dynamic means that while many Toronto rappers have grievances with Akademiks, they also recognize that his coverage can be beneficial for exposure.
TORONTO AND LOS ANGELES
Overall, DJ Akademiks’ relationship with Toronto rappers is marked by a blend of admiration, controversy, and criticism. While he’s helped put a spotlight on the scene, many artists feel his focus on the city’s conflicts and street politics overshadows the true talent coming out of Toronto.

TOP5 SAYS IT’S NOT A THREAT
“It’s not a threat, I’m just looking for Metro Boomin and Kendrick Lamar,” he began. “I’m doing my homework on them right now, doing my tasks on them right now. Nothing incriminating. I’m just looking for them. I want Metro Booming one-on-one. I don’t want no weapons, nothing. I’m knocking the f*ck outta him.
Kendrick Lamar, you cross the border, Chubbs calling me, you passed the border man.” From there, Akademiks brought up the Toronto restaurant, New Ho King. Top5 promised to quit rapping if Lamar goes there without 20 police officers to protect him.
