46 Years of Rapper’s Delight: VIP Records Reflects on the First Hip-Hop Record Sold on the West Coast
September marks 46 years since the Sugar Hill Gang released Rapper’s Delight, a record that forever changed music history. Widely recognized as the first commercially successful rap single, the track didn’t just dominate radio waves—it broke barriers across the country.
One of the most important milestones happened on the West Coast, thanks to Long Beach’s legendary VIP Records.
Kelvin Anderson of VIP Records recalled the moment:
“VIP Records, under my brother’s leadership, was the first to sell a rap record on the West Coast, period. Now, we know the Sugar Hill Gang is not the first rap group, but when you think across the country and around the world, they are the first rap group to do it. My brother had a relationship with the Robinson family, and I remember when they sent us the Rapper’s Delight 12-inch. They asked us to listen and see if we thought we could sell it—and of course, we said yes.”
From there, VIP Records didn’t just sell the single in their own store. Anderson explained how the shop worked with other independent retail outlets to spread the sound:
“We brought it in, put it in VIP, and my brother had a good relationship with a lot of the other independent retail stores here. We got them in the majority of the old stores.”
This move cemented VIP Records as a pioneering force in West Coast hip-hop history, bridging the gap between East Coast innovation and California’s growing rap scene.

A Legacy That Lives On
While Rapper’s Delight wasn’t the first rap song ever recorded, it was the first to break through commercially and reach mainstream audiences. For West Coast fans, VIP Records became the gateway to experiencing the cultural shift firsthand.
Now, 46 years later, the legacy of Rapper’s Delight and VIP Records’ role in its success continues to inspire conversations about hip-hop’s early days and the power of independent record stores in shaping music culture.
