Big Daddy Kane Rocks Toronto with Russell Peters’ Old School Mixtape Party
Hip hop icon Big Daddy Kane brought timeless energy back to Toronto as part of Russell Peters’ Old School Mixtape Party, held during the Just For Laughs Festival. The free outdoor show celebrated the culture’s golden era, blending comedy, hip hop, and dance music into an unforgettable experience for fans.
Hosted by Russell Peters and DJ Starting From Scratch, the lineup featured legendary acts including EPMD, Flavor Flav, Nice & Smooth, Crystal Waters, and Renée Neufville from Zhané. The event proved why Toronto remains a hub for hip hop and Caribbean-inspired culture, echoing the city’s tradition of big summer events like Caribana. The event took place three years ago today.
The timing of this performance comes as Big Daddy Kane is once again trending in the hip hop world thanks to his Club Shay Shay interview with Shannon Sharpe, where he discussed his 40-year journey in music and his influence on artists like Tupac, Biggie, Jay-Z, LL Cool J, and Kendrick Lamar.
“I’m glad they turned Jay-Z down. … I’m glad I couldn’t get him a deal. To see this dude become a billionaire, I’m like, ‘In their face. Yes!'” – Big Daddy Kane pic.twitter.com/Ep2Sh3XkUt
